Water and lipide shifts in pregnancy.

چکیده

The bearing of young by mammals is considered a normal biological process. Pregnancy once established, however, proceeds with little regard for the life of the mother. Indeed, marked disease states may be present and progressing without the production of abortion. In this respect, namely, that the fetus matures with little regard for the life of the mother, the growth of a fetus in a host is similar to the growth of a tumor in a host. Nevertheless, most fetuses grow and mature in the host with no detrimental effect on the well-being of the mother. This is in sharp contrast to tumor growths, most of which ultimately lead to the death of the host. Changes in the weight, and levels of water and lipides in the organs and tissues of the albino rat bearing Walker carcinosarcoma 256, have been established (5). The present study was performed to see if water and lipide levels in fetal and placental tissues were similar to those in the Walker tumor. The weight and the water and lipide levels were then determined in the spleen, diaphragm, and carcass of the pregnant albino rat, and changes were compared with those previously found in these tissues of the tumor-bearing rat.

Preparation of lipide extracts from brain tissue.

For the preparation of lipide extracts from tissues, the method of Bloor (I), either in its original form or with slight modifications, has been a standard procedure. This method consists in extracting the tissue with a mixture of ethyl alcohol and ether. Since the extract obtained is known to contain non-lipide contaminants, it is usually taken to dryness and the residue extracted with a solve...

The Effect of a Phthalanilide Derivative on Lipide Metabolism in L1210 Leukemia Cells.

An active ant-ileukemic phthalanilide, 2-chloro-4'-4"-di-2-imidazolin-2-ylterephthalanilide (NSC-60339) markedly inhibited the in vitro incorporation of acetate into lipides of L1210 cells after in vivo administration. The depression of lipide biosyn thesis is considered to be the primary mechanism of anti-leukemic action of this class of compounds because (a) it is not found when an inactive c...

The lipide composition of epidermis and dermis of mice undergoing carcinogenesis by methylcholanthrene.

The lipide composition of epidermis and dermis under the influence of the hair growth cycle and following the topical application of methylcholanthrene was inves tigated. The percentage of cholesterol and phospholipide was lowest in anagen and telogen epidermis, was nearly doubled in early and late hyperplastic epidermis, and rose to even higher values in squamous-cell carcinomas. The cholester...

The role of lipides in electron transport. III. Purification and identification of a cytochrome c reductase lipide cofactor.

Recent investigations have implicated vitamin E as a possible cofactor for the oxidized diphosphopyridine nucleotide (DPN)and succinate-cytochrome c reductases of rat skeletal muscle and bovine heart muscle. It was demonstrated that added vitamin E increases the activity of the above cytochrome c reductases. Moreover, the almost complete loss of enzymatic activity resulting from isooctane extra...

The Relation between Protein Synthesis and Lipide Accumulation in L Strain Cells and Ehrlich Ascites Cells

It has long been known that fat accumulates in old injured cells both in tissue culture and in many mammalian disease states. The use of L cells grown in suspension tissue culture permitted the opportunity to study conditions in which lipide accumulation could be retarded or accelerated. These cultures exhibit a three-phase growth curve which is similar to that previously found with bacteria an...
